Others, however, continue to have difficulty with language or social skills, and the teen years can bring worse behavioral and emotional problems. Some children show signs of autism spectrum disorder in early infancy, such as reduced eye contact, lack of response to their name or indifference to caregivers. Other children may develop normally for the first few months or years of life, but then suddenly become withdrawn or aggressive or lose language skills they’ve already acquired. In contrast to classic autism, individuals with Asperger syndrome usually do not possess major cognitive difficulties, and their IQ is in the normal or even high range. In addition, they do not exhibit a delay in language acquisition. Individuals with PDD-NOS exhibit some but not all of the same signs and symptoms as classic autism. They may only eat foods of a certain color or texture, not eat enough or eat too much, or eat things that aren’t food. They can have constipation, which makes them feel full even if they’re not, or have issues with coughing or choking while they eat. Talk to your doctor before trying something different, like a special diet. There’s no hard evidence that special diets help children with ASD. If you weren’t diagnosed with autism as a child but notice yourself showing symptoms, talk to your doctor. Children with Asperger’s syndrome tend to score in the average or above-average range on intelligence tests.
